A wave of “velvet nationalism” caused by Sąjūdis 20 years ago is developing into a dangerous tsunami of neo-nazism. While wearing a trendy mask of euroscepticism and preaching the national culture, the lithuanian far-right has lately been acquiring the attitudes of open racism and xenophobia. Marches, numbering thousands of neo-nazis, chanting ‘Lithuania for Lithuanians!’, the use of violence and aggression against foreigners, ultra-right radicalism, reaching up to the highest echelons of government - all this leads to conclusion that this patriotism, carefully nourished by the lithuanian government for the past 20 years, has grown into a sort of radical and extreme form, akin to fascism.
Lithuanian government bans peaceful rallies and demonstrations oriented against its policy, but at the same time it allows the hate-spreading ultra-nationalists to march freely. During these marches the police kindly provides an escort to the aggressive skinheads, allows them to commit serious acts of violence, and at the same time, violently arrest those, who stand in opposition. The government and the police of a nation-state will always be on the side of nationalists. We will have to overcome this odious hate-spreading nationalism by ourselves.
The “Antifa Lithuania” blog seeks to prevent the growth of neo-nazism in Lithuania. It’s done by publicizing the facts about the local activities of neo-nazis, promoting racial and ethnic harmony, speaking out for peace, tolerance and solidarity. Anyone can contribute to this blog by using the “Prisidėk” page and providing some interesting information.
We distance ourselves from specific political powers. We are united only in fighting against aggression, and the various manifestations of neo-nazism and fascism. Diversity in views and opinions is gladly welcome.
